There are some people I just love listening to talk.

David Perell is one of those people.

David is an entrepreneur, writer, and creator of the renown online course Write of Passage which helps aspiring writers transform their lives by writing online.

A lot of people know David on the internet because of his prolific writing and content creation, but what I was interested in talking to him about is how the shifts in David’s personal and spiritual life fuel his creative endeavors.

In this conversation we talk about David’s journey with his faith and how it’s empowered him to be a better leader and step even more deeply into his purpose.

It feels like many people I talk to these days have difficulty feeling aligned with their purpose. A big part of my personal hypothesis is that uncovering this is a process that occurs naturally once you begin to do the inner work and remove the impediments that make it easy to embrace what you love.

David is one of these people with a lot of interesting ideas, perspectives, and metaphors to powerfully communicate concepts. This conversation is no exception.

Here are some of the ideas I found very interesting:

  • How we treat friendship different than other relationships

  • Ditching modern media for ancient wisdom

  • The problem with Maslow’s hierarchy

  • The misconstrued narrative of spirituality or effectiveness

  • How creating from love vs. fear impacts outcomes

  • Why being more like a butter knife gets you further than a steak knife

  • How laziness can actually aid your success

For those interested in writing online, I highly recommend checking out Write of Passage as well as his new podcast “How I Write” which details the writing habits and process of many prolific thinkers.

I hope you enjoy this conversation and have a wonderful day!
