Why is it that we can be doing something and our mind starts to think about something else involuntarily?

Is this a helpful part of human nature? A nuisance?

The nature of mind-wandering is something that scientist Arnaud Delorme has been investigating for the past 20 years. In this conversation, we explore what he has learned as well as some of the main questions the scientific community is trying to understand around the nature of mind. Arnaud recently released a book on this topic and his research called Why Our Minds Wander.

Interesting topics covered in the conversation include:

  • What science says about mind wanderings impact on creativity and happiness

  • How he is studying telepathy

  • The existing models of the consciousness and the brain and what it will take for science to acknowledge that consciousness exists beyond the brain

  • What he learned from EEG studies of 4 different types of meditation practices in India

One discussion point I found myself very excited about was the implications for humanity if science reaches greater consensus about consciousness and how we are all connected. I completely agree and it's why I’m so excited that this field of research seems to be accelerating.

I hope you enjoy this conversation,

-Scott
